"We know that education is the best investment our society can make for the future, said David L. Boren, founder and chairman of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. If we make all of the right policy decisions in every other area but fail to adequately educate the next generation, we will imperil the future of our society. By working together to give academic achievement the recognition it deserves, we send a strong message to our state and to the nation that Oklahomans value scholastic excellence.
The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence recognizes and honors academic excellence in Oklahoma's public schools through a prestigious Awards Program, which bestows $199,000 in cash awards annually. Awards given at the Academic Awards Banquet in May include a $1,500 scholarship to each of the 100 Academic All-State scholars selected from Oklahoma's public high school graduating seniors.
Academic All-Staters recipients are honored at the annual Academic
Awards Banquet, which is attended by more than 1,000 supporters of public education
and televised statewide by OETA.
Since the programs inception in 1987, 1,800 high school seniors from 273 school districts have been named All-State Scholars. Besides the $1500 scholarship, All-Staters receive a medallion and a commemorative plaque. The students schools receive an Academic All-State flag to display on campus.
Most Academic All-State nominees are in the top 1 percent academically of all public high school seniors, which makes the selection process very competitive. Once nominated, recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement, as well as an essay submitted by each nominee.
