Kelley School Reopens

Kelley Elementary School
Moore, Oklahoma

Kelley Elementary School was completely destroyed by the massive F-5 tornado of May 3, 1999. The destruction extended completely to the surrounding neighborhood. On August 17, 2000, a new, totally rebuilt Kelley School reopened.

The school was reconstructed with a floor plan as nearly identical to the original as was possible.

Kelley teachers and students held classes in an alternative location during the '99-00 school year.

A special grand opening assembly was held on August 31, 2000.

Oklahoma's First Lady, Kathy Keating was a special guest for the grand opening ceremony.

Many Foundation members were among the guests at the ceremony, and witnessed Mrs. Keating's presentation of a Millennium Governors Quilt to Principal Kay Engle.

"The Friendship Quilt"

Two fourth grade classes from Moorestown Friends School, a Quaker school from Moorestown, NJ., worked for about a year to collect signatures of all state governors on squares to include in their Millennium Governors Quilt. The quilt, of bright red, green and blue squares, also has the signatures of the 35 students who created the quilt and their class pictures on the back.

The quilt was presented to Governor Frank Keating in August at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. Cathy Keating presented the quilt to Kelley Aug. 31 at a community open house. The quilt will hang in the media center.

The Moorestown school was established in 1750 and holds as one of its tenets that it should teach children about community service and giving back to the community, according to the parent-organizer of the project, Linda Vizi. One of the corner squares on the front of the quilt says, ". . . presented in the spirit of friendship."
